Is Proton VPN's free plan enough, or will you end up paying?
Summary
For one device on everyday browsing, the free plan can be enough: it has no data cap, no time limit and no ads. The limits show up elsewhere. You can connect one device at a time, servers come from 10 countries that Proton describes as "randomly selected," and Proton's own pricing page rates the speed as medium. Streaming, torrenting, choosing your country or covering a second device all require a paid plan.
What you get for nothing
Proton's plan documentation lists Free as "Unlimited data," "Connect on only 1 device at the same time" and "Strict audited no-logs policy." The kill switch, DNS leak protection and the Stealth protocol are all included. Signing up doesn't ask for a credit card.
The 10 countries are the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
There's one way around the single-device limit that Proton lists itself: the free plan allows "unlimited devices" connected to your router, so if you set the VPN up on a router, everything behind it is covered.
So is it slow?
Proton says two things here. The free VPN page promises "no data or speed limits," and the pricing FAQ says "no artificial speed limits." The plan cards on that same pricing page call Free "Medium VPN speed" and Plus "Highest VPN speed," up to 10 Gbps. Read together, Proton isn't throttling free users, but it isn't claiming parity with Plus either.
Where the free plan stops
These are the things Proton marks as paid features:

- P2P and BitTorrent
- Secure Core servers
- NetShield ad, tracker and malware blocking
- Split tunneling and the browser extension
