Pritunl and ZeroTier: what per-server and per-device pricing does to a per-person figure

Two units, one question

Why a price in one unit does not go into a column sorted by another is the subject of article-07. This article does not repeat it; it does the arithmetic that comes after.

The page's word is "host"; this site's dataset row says "server" and notes the page's word. They mean the same thing. Pritunl is software, and the machine it runs on is yours to provide. What your cloud provider charges for that machine is not inside the $10 or the $70.

Ten people, one device each, on ZeroTier Essential

Ten devices, all inside the base allowance.

The assumption is that every one of the ten connects a single laptop and nothing else. One phone added to the network is device number eleven, and the next section applies.

Ten people, two devices each, on the same Essential plan

Twenty devices: ten in the base fee, ten extra.

Same ten people, and the per-person figure went from $1.80 to $3.80. What moved was not the headcount but a fact about your company that no pricing page knows: how many things each person connects. Over three years, $38 x 36 = $1,368.

Fifty people with two devices each is 100 devices. On Essential that is $18 + 90 x $2.00 = $198; on Scale the same 100 devices fit inside the $179 base, or $3.58 a person. The two plans cross at 91 devices: 90 devices on Essential is $178, 91 is $180 against Scale's $179.

Ten people and fifty people on one Pritunl Premium host

One host is one $10 bill, and there is nowhere to enter a headcount.

Three years is $10 x 36 = $360. That covers what you pay Pritunl and nothing else; the cloud instance or physical machine the host runs on is a separate bill, one Pritunl does not publish and your provider's invoice does. Whether one host comfortably carries fifty people is not on the price list either. Terminating a VPN on your own hardware is the subject of article-15; what a cloud provider meters by the hour is in article-17.

Community is free for a single host. Whether a business may run on it is a question for Pritunl's own terms, and the vendor page (d/pritunl) leaves that to the reader.

Side by side: ten people, "per person"

Remove the last column and the table lies. This site's per-user rankings have no such column, which is why ZeroTier and Pritunl appear on their own pages (d/zerotier, d/pritunl) with the unit spelled out and stay out of the ordering. VyprVPN Business's five-user bundle gets the same treatment, in article-63.

Who this is not for

If everyone on your team has exactly one device and nobody intends to run a server, this arithmetic does not change your shortlist. Compare the prices that are published per user, at your headcount, and the calculator does that. If your company has more machines than people, or can run its own server, the figures divided out here may come in under any per-user plan on this site. That is a consequence of the unit, not a judgment about the products.
