How long before an EOR hire can actually start work?
Summary
Days, not weeks, when nothing goes wrong. Remote puts its global average at about three days, counted from the moment the new hire finishes entering their details. That figure assumes the person already has the right to work in the country and nobody asks for changes to the employment agreement. Visa work, missing documents, contract redlines, and an unpaid deposit are what push a start date back.
Where the clock starts
Remote starts counting once the employee has been invited to the platform and has completed self-enrollment. Customers on a signed SLA or Service Order also need that signature in place. The "approximately 3 days" average describes people who act quickly, already hold a right to work, and accept the agreement with no edits.
You can't pick any start date you like, either. Remote sets a minimum lead time for every country and shows the next available start date on a calendar when you send the invite. Deel's contract flow does the same thing, offering "the earliest permitted date based on onboarding requirements and country of employment." Deel returns a cost quote immediately in supported countries and within 30 minutes to one business day in the rest.
What pushes the date back
Remote lists five causes:
- the employee doesn't fill in their personal information on time
- the employee doesn't have the required documents
- back and forth over changes to the employment agreement
- right-to-work or visa processes
- a medical exam that hasn't been done, in countries that require one
Remote won't backdate an employment agreement, so when onboarding runs late it moves the start date instead. It calls that "not uncommon."
Contract changes are the hardest part to predict. Deel's legal team answers amendment requests within five business days and warns that this "may delay the onboarding process." If the employee signs before the changes are processed, the pending requests are canceled. Multiplier quotes 3 to 5 days of legal review for contract changes.
On Deel, the employee uploads a government ID, proof of address, a tax identification number, and bank details. A bank account in someone else's name will delay or block the first salary payment.
Holds on the company side
A hire whose paperwork is complete can still wait on you. Remote runs a Know Your Business review on the company when the first person is invited, and no onboarding can finish until that review is approved.
Then there's the deposit. Remote generates a reserve invoice the moment you add the employee and blocks onboarding until it's paid, unless an exception is granted. Oyster sends its deposit invoice within two business days and won't share any agreements until payment clears. Deel countersigns the employment agreement once the deposit is in. How big these deposits are, and when you get them back, is covered in the article on costs beyond the monthly fee.
Own entity or partner
Multiplier's help center shows how much the provider's setup matters. Where it employs through its own entity and the contract has no changes, onboarding can finish in 3 working days or less. Where it goes through a partner entity, it quotes 13 to 15 working days. In countries that require pre-registration, it wants onboarding done at least 7 days before the joining date.
