What does an EOR charge you on top of the monthly fee?
Summary
Two lump sums matter most: a deposit when you hire and the costs that come due when the job ends. Deel's standard deposit is one to one and a half months of the full monthly bill, salary included, and you don't see it again until the person leaves and the last invoice is settled. Severance, payout of unused vacation, and legal fees land on your invoice even at providers that charge nothing to process a termination.
The deposit
Picture an employee whose all-in monthly bill (salary, employer costs, allowances, and the management fee) comes to $8,000. At Deel, whose standard deposit is "between 1 - 1.5 all monthly charges," that's $8,000 to $12,000 held for as long as the person works for you. Deel caps it at two months, or $16,000 here, with exceptions for things like variable pay and longer notice periods. It comes back "once the EOR resigns or their contract is terminated after any outstanding invoices have been settled." Deel also runs a separate Severance Accrual, which it says "is separate from the EOR Deposit."
The others differ mostly in when they ask:
- Oyster normally asks for a one-month, fully refundable deposit. Its terms return it within 60 days of receiving everything you owe.
- Multiplier takes an interest-free, refundable deposit sized on employment costs, service fees, and notice periods, and refunds it within 60 days of the employee's last working day.
- Remote says it collects reserves "in rare, high risk circumstances." When it does, the amount is based on the employee's estimated monthly gross salary plus mandatory employer costs, and any balance is credited or refunded once termination costs are settled.
When the job ends
"We do not charge any fees for terminating contracts of employees through Remote," its help center says. "However, any costs associated with terminations such as severance pay for remaining vacation days, or legal fees if we have to go to court or similar will be included in your monthly invoice." If a termination needs extra legal advice under local law or the employment agreement, Remote tells you about the charge before going ahead.
Oyster's pricing page says processing terminations is included in the subscription. Its terms still define "Transition Costs" as yours, listing "payment in lieu of notice; accrued vacation pay; severance pay." Multiplier's EOR terms make the client liable for legal and administrative fees arising from a termination and set a penalty of 15% of the full and final invoice if the client breaches the termination process. Deel says that "mutually negotiated termination agreements will always include the payment of a severance," which it does to reduce risk.
None of these amounts appear on a pricing page, because they depend on the country's law and the terms of the employment agreement.
Paying late
Remote's terms charge interest at 0.1% per day on overdue amounts, or the legal maximum if that is lower, and let Remote suspend or end services if reserves or fees go unpaid. Deel charges 0.15% of the invoice per day after a seven-day grace period that is "not an extension of the payment terms." Deel's EOR invoices are due five calendar days after they are issued.
Moving someone to another country
If an employee relocates and Remote has to transfer them between its own entities, there is "a one-time cost," separate from the monthly management fee, with mobility costs charged on top. Remote doesn't publish the amount.
