Hiring in Spain through an EOR adds 47.9%, the heaviest of fifteen countries. Why does it fall to 32.3% at €120,000?
Summary
Summary
A €60,000 hire costs the employer €88,762. Five contribution lines totaling 30.65% run on a base that includes the two statutory extra payments, for €18,762, and the two extra payments themselves add €10,000. The base is capped at €61,214 a year, and a €60,000 salary's base (fourteen months, €70,000) is already past it. So a €120,000 hire pays the same €18,762 of contributions, plus €20,000 of extra payments, which comes to 32.3%. That the extra payments are inside the base is something this site settled on 2026-09-06 from Article 147 of the General Social Security Law. The fee sits on its own line in dollars.
Inside the 47.9%
| Line | Rate | Base, capped at €61,214 | On €60,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common contingencies | 23.60% | €61,214 | €14,447 |
| Unemployment, indefinite contract | 5.50% | €61,214 | €3,367 |
| Intergenerational equity mechanism (MEI), employer share | 0.75% | €61,214 | €459 |
| Vocational training | 0.60% | €61,214 | €367 |
| Wage guarantee fund (FOGASA) | 0.20% | €61,214 | €122 |
| Statutory contributions | 30.65% | €18,762 | |
| Statutory extra payments (Christmas, and one set by collective agreement) | two months | €10,000 | |
| Added to the salary | €28,762 |
Employer cost €88,762, 47.9% above the salary; €158,762 and 32.3% at €120,000.
The extra payments are in the base. Article 31 of the Workers' Statute requires two extra payments a year (a collective agreement may prorate them across twelve months), and Article 147.1 of the General Social Security Law puts them in the contribution base. Until 6 September this site left them out for lack of a source; on the day they were read in, every employer figure for Spain rose. The entry is in the change log.
Where the cap bites. The maximum base is €61,214 a year. Any salary whose fourteen-month base exceeds that, which is €52,469 on a twelve-month reading, pays no more in contributions. This site's mid salary of €60,000 is already above it.
Not in this floor. Occupational accident insurance (0.90% to 7.15% by activity, not included), allowances under collective agreements, severance (20 days per year of service on an objective dismissal of an indefinite contract, not in the rate).
Heaviest at the mid salary, biggest drop at the senior one
47.9% ranks first, above Brazil's 46.4% and Portugal's 44.4%. Because of the cap, Spain falls to 32.3% at €120,000, below both Brazil (still 46.4%) and Portugal (still 44.4%). "Spain is expensive" is true at the mid salary and reverses at the senior one.
